BROWARD CHAPTER OF BLACK TREATMENT ADVOCATES NETWORK OBSERVE WORLD AIDS DAY AT LIGHT UP SISTRUNK
Fort Lauderdale, Florida – The Broward County Chapter of Black Treatment Advocates Network (BTAN) will join the City of Fort Lauderdale at the 2017 “Light Up Sistrunk” event. Light Up Sistrunk will take place on Friday, December 1st, 2017 starting at 5:00 pm, on Historic Sistrunk Boulevard from NW 9 Avenue to NW 11 Avenue. This is a free community event with featured entertainment, toy giveaway, health fair, and a kids and teen zone.
BTAN and community partners will host Light Up Sistrunk Holiday Wonderland, featuring a toy giveaway and Free HIV, STI and Hepatitis testing, as well as access to community providers and resources.
“We are proud to partner with BTAN for Light Up Sistrunk and World AIDS Day,” said Fort Lauderdale Commissioner Robert L. McKinzie. “This holiday spectacular helps build community and spread the spirit of the season; raises awareness about the importance of HIV education, prevention, and treatment; while highlighting the array of community resources available for support.”
The event is an opportunity for the Broward’s BTAN Chapter to observe World AIDS Day (WAD). This year’s theme is “Increasing Impact through Transparency, Accountability, and Partnerships”. WAD encourages everyone worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV, and remember those who have died. The day has been observed annually on December 1stsince 1988. World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day.
“We welcome this opportunity to partner with the City of Fort Lauderdale during Light Up Sistrunk to increase our community impact in observance of World AIDS Day,” said Krystle Kirkland-Mobley, Minority AIDS Coordinator/HIV Prevention Program, Florida Department of Health in Broward County and Government Co-Chairperson, BTAN.
BTAN is a workgroup of theBroward County HIV Prevention Planning Council (BCHPPC) which is a government-community partnership created to provide guidance to the Florida Department of Health in Broward County, HIV Prevention Program to foster a coordinated system of care.
